  • Gene Therapy lessens symtoms of Parkinsons in early clinical trial…

    March 16, 2011

A small clinical trial conducted at seven medical centers shows promise for treating 23 patients with Parkinson’s. The trial involved a single treatment in which a specialized gene piggybacked on a virus was injected directly into the brain.  Six months following treatment patients showed on average a 23% improvement in motor function. The specific mission of the therapy was to facilitate greater production of an enzyme know as GAD an enzyme that catalyses production of an inhibitory neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid – which in effect helps lessen tremors associated with Parkinson’s.

Researchers frm the University of Pennsylvania report a novel gene therapy treatment has successfully eliminated tumors in patients with Lymphocytic Leukemia. In a small group study two of three patients now show remission as much a year following the initial treatment. A third patient shows a 70% improvement. The results of this approach surprised even the researchers at the University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center and Perelman School of Medicine with its effectiveness. Upon treatment cancerous tumors were completely destroyed within a matter of weeks.

The gene therapy procedure took pathogen fighting T-Cells from each patient. These T-cells were then modified and grown outside the body. When entered back into the body the new genetically engineered T-cells multiplied a thousand fold and destroyed any and all cancer cells they came across.

Gene Therapy shows promise for treating diseases such as cystic fibrosis, heart disease, hemophilia, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, cancer, hearing defects and basically any ailment which has a genetic base. There is still much to learn about this developing science  and scientists  around the world are now in the process of defining how this new health field will ultimately work. Limited clinical trials are currently being conducted in United States and other countries.
